diffrent types of dentures

Different types of dentures have different advantages and disadvantages. Some dentures can last individuals a lifetime, while others may need replacing. In this article, we explore the different dentures near you and how to decide which denture type is best for your needs.

#1 Traditional Complete Dentures

Complete dentures replace all of a patient’s teeth. They sit over the gums and are typically placed 8-12 weeks after having teeth removed or extracted.

Complete dentures are often cheaper than other dentures that replace all teeth, and they have a short treatment time compared to other denture types as well.

#2 Partial Dentures

These are often suggested by dentists when a patient still has some of their natural healthy teeth. They fit around your natural teeth to fill in any gaps and restore functionality.

These dentures are removable and convenient, allowing you to take them out whenever you need them. Partial dentures work to keep teeth from moving and are made from acrylic material.

#3 Custom Dentures

These dentures are completely customized to your smile, making for a very natural-looking appearance that suits your needs. This denture type is more expensive than others due to it being made out of more expensive material.

#4 Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are placed directly after your teeth are extracted. While this prevents patients from spending a long time without teeth, not everyone is a viable candidate.

#5 Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures use a dental implant used to secure the denture into your mouth. This type of denture is invasive but very solid and a permanent replacement for missing teeth.

How Long Do Different Types of Dentures Last?

There are different lifetimes for different types of dentures. Conventional dentures typically last between 7-10 years, and partial dentures can last up to 12 years. If you compare this to implant-supported dentures, which can last up to 20 years or longer when properly cared for, you may learn more about this form of denture. In most cases, you will need to have your dentures inspected at the 3-, 5-, 7- and 10-year mark to ensure they are still functioning correctly.

Signs You May Need a Denture Replacement

If you find that your dentures are causing you pain or sores, they may not need to be replaced, but they will need to be adjusted by a dentist near you.

If your dentures have a broken base, they will automatically need a replacement, as they won’t work without a solid base.

When you have a broken or chipped tooth, it does not mean your dentures will have to be entirely replaced. Sometimes they can be repaired at a dental clinic in Saskatoon. Do not try to repair your dentures by yourself, as this could lead to serious issues with your oral health down the line.

Stained dentures may also need replacing. Over time, cracks or fractures can occur as indentures, making them look less than ideal and increasing their risk of causing infection.
